Salta (Argentina): a city to view from above Cerro San Bernardo as a tourist observation point

Main Article Content

Claudia Alejandra Troncoso

Abstract

The paper analyzes the processes through which Cerro San Bernardo (Salta) has become a tourist observation point, considering material adaptations, images and practices involved. To that end, promotional information concerning this hill as an observation point and Salta as a tourist attraction was gathered and systematized. Tourists’ activities were also observed and recorded. In addition, personal interviews to public and private actors involved in local tourism were conducted. The paper concludes that visual appreciation from the top of San Bernardo replicates some traditions about what to do at observation points and how. It also points out the need to consider these places and the observation practices associated to them together with the array of activities involved in tourists' visits.
