Abstract

The district of General Pueyrredón is an administrative unit of great urban tradition, headed by the city of Mar del Plata. It should be pointed out, though, that around 1980 other towns from this district began to show positive signs in their demographic dynamics. The acknowledgement of towns within a third-rank civil unit, like districts or departments, presupposes a level of complexity related to theoretical, socio-cultural and methodological aspects, for there are various text productions defining "town". Thus, the contribution that this paper makes is threefold: unifying criteria, evidencing categorization dynamics and highlighting the importance of having direct knowledge of the territory to improve typologies. The aim is identifying the towns in the district of General Pueyrredón by means of the use of SIG as a potential tool to analyze socio-territorial processes
